Visitors to Northern Virginia may be surprised to learn about the numerous top events that take place year round.

Located next to the nation's capital, there are plantations, horse farms, and opportunities back to colonial times that are sure to maintain the interest of travelers of all ages.

Loudon County Fair - Leesburg boasts this five-day event every October. Offering agriculture exhibits, rides, a variety of music and great selection of food, it offers fun for all ages.

Olde Towne Jingle Bell Carriage Rides of Fredricksburg - Forty blocks of historic neighborhoods lined with cobblestone streets and magnificent architecture are the location for these horse drawn carriage rides. The jingling sound of the bells down the street add to the holiday cheer. These rides take place from mid-November til the end of December.

Del Ray Artisans Holiday Market - The annual event in Alexandria takes place for three weekends in December. Handmade arts and crafts from local artisans are offered at the Del Ray Artisans Gallery at Colasanto Center.

Meadowlark's Winter Walk of Lights - Meadowlark Botanical Gardens in Vienna feature a display of more than 500,000 lights from Nov. 15 through Jan. 5. Highlights include a two-story animated fountain and a Gingerbread Village.

Metropolitan Schools of the Arts New Year's Eve Benefit Gala - This New Year's Eve Gala will be held at Waterford at Springfield. The event offers entertainment for the entire family. Tickets must be purchased in advance.

Civil War Ball at Gadsby's Tavern - A Victorian era ball featuring desserts, a cash bar, live music and waltzes, it allows guests to step back in time. Held at the Alexandria tavern, attendees are encouraged to dress in period attire, whether they choose military or civilian wear. The event is held in late January.

George Washington Birthday Celebration Weekend - Alexandria boasts the city-wide celebration honoring the nation's first president on President's Day weekend. Activities include a 10K race, a Birthday Parade and banquet and ball.

Under the Canopy - The Athenaeum in Alexandria offers a theatrical world that is designed for infants and toddlers. Targeted toward children up to 4 years of age, tickets are required.

Bacchus Wine and Food Festival at the Virginia Living Museum - Wines from around the globe, foods from local eateries and great entertainment grace this annual sell-out event. Appealing to all ages, but with wine only available to those 21 and older, this has been voted one of the "Best in the 757." Set for February.

The Sugarloaf Crafts Festival - Visitors are given the opportunity to browse through the fine arts and crafts made by 250 well-known American artists. This annual event, held in Chantilly, takes place every January.

There are many other Northern Virginia events to choose from but these are a few of the favorites by attendees.
