The James River has played a major role in much of the state’s history. Once the setting for sprawling plantations, today the James River is a favorite destination for those who enjoy spending time outdoors.

The James River State Park provides one place where you can enjoy all the best that this area has to offer. James River State Park boasts gorgeous views, lovely meadows, three miles of river front and much more.

The 1500 acres of James River State Park include some of the best river frontage that you’ll find. You can enjoy fishing on the river or in one of the three fishing ponds. The fishing pier is accessible by wheelchair, so no one will be left out.

While the River might be the main attraction, you’ll also find 15 miles of gorgeous trails. The trails are perfect for hiking, biking or horseback riding. If you are bringing your horse, feel free to stay the night, as James River State Park offers facilities for horse camping.

Please note that horses must be kept in a stall. Twenty horse stalls are available. Be sure that you reserve your stall as soon as you have dates in mind. Your other four-legged friends are also welcome. Dogs must be leashed, and there is a per-night fee if you keep a dog in a cabin.

If you do want to spend the night you will have plenty of options. You can choose a primitive campground, the bunkhouse or one of the park’s cabins. Consider a weekend adventure on the water by taking advantage of the option for canoe-in camping. You can canoe right to the shore and then walk to your campsite. You’ll be a stone’s throw from great fishing and, of course, the trails are nearby as well.

Some special programs, such as wildlife watching hikes, are offered throughout the year. Be sure to bring your binoculars and a camera. Maybe you’ll get lucky and be the next to spot an eastern painted turtle or one of the bird’s that are on your must-see list.
