While the list of events across Virginia seems to go on forever, there is no way to partake of all the activities and events that are spread across all the regi
ons in the state.

The top events in winter offer something for those with a variety of interests. There are events for those of all ages, plus for families and couples.

Richmond International Film Festival – RIFF screens produced films, music videos, and screenplays of all genres from more than 20 different countries. Many filmmakers and writers will be in attendance during the February festival and competing for top awards.

Annual Virginia Wine Expo – The state that is covered with wineries hosts wine events as well. Richmond is the home of the national destination event that celebrates Virginia’s flavorful wines as well as the culinary excellence plus the history and culture of the area. Richmond hosts the event every February.

Annual Piney River Volunteer Fire Department Chitterling Dinner – For 56 years people have gathered in Nelson for chitterlings and all the fixings or ham, fried chicken and side dishes. Food is prepared by some of Nelson County’s best cooks with proceeds benefiting the local volunteer fire department. The event is set for a Saturday in February.

Annual Winter Wine Wine Festival – Historic Staunton Foundation’s Annual Winter Wine Festival is held at the Stonewall Jackson Hotel in Staunton every February. More than 15 wineries participate in the event.

Mid-Atlantic Quilt Festival – Quilting plays a significant role in Appalachian heritage. The annual quilt festival in Hampton in February features more than 250 vendor booths plus an exhibit of magnificent handcrafted quilts.

The Highland Maple Festival – Monterey boasts the event that celebrates the tradition of making maple syrup in the Highlands. The Library of Congress has designated this weekend event a “Local Legacy”. Taking place every March, it draws about 50,000 people each year.

Virginia Festival of the Book – With venues throughout Charlottesville and Albemarle, the annual Festival of the Book in March features hundreds of authors over a five-day period. The majority of events are offered free and are open to the public.

Crooked Road Festival – Music is an important part of mountain heritage and this annual event in March at the Center for the Arts at Virginia Tech gives visitors insight in the music of the area. The celebration of music, dance and craftsmanship of the region features well known musicians from the area.

Annual Lex Allen Literary Festival – The annual spring event in March in honor of the former Hollins University English professor features readings, authors and a variety of books. The event has taken place for more than 50 years.

Daffodil Festival – Gloucester hosts the annual Daffodil Festival each spring. Showcasing beautiful daffodils plus a great variety of foods, vendors and fun for all.
