Southern Virginia is a region of the state that takes pride in culture and heritage. Offering a view into the past, this region stands out from the rest with history, music, wine and amazing food offerings.

Visitors to the region any time of the year will experience the sights, sounds and tastes that make the region unique and fun. While there are dozens of events to choose from in the region, some do stand out from the rest.

Smith River Fest – The entire family will enjoy this annual event to celebrate the great outdoors and showcase the Smith River. Held in Martinsville, this gathering features a River Race, vendors, gear swap, live demonstrations, hiking, biking, fishing and paddling plus other activities.

Harvest Days Festival – Great food, music and arts and crafts make a fun-filled Saturday in October in Clarksville. The only lakeside town in the state enjoys the kickoff to autumn with the event. There is also a car show and a live auction.

Harrisonburg International Festival – A free day of family fun at Hillandale Park celebrates the cultures that comprise the local community. During this weekend in September, event-goers enjoy international foods, music, dance, and traditional folk art from a World Bazaar. There is a multi-language area plus various activities.

Fieldale Heritage Festival – On a weekend in May, folks gather in Fieldale to celebrate culture and heritage. Historic displays date back to the community’s start. There are plenty of music performances, artisans demonstrations, food, walking tours and other activities to make the annual event a crowd pleaser.

Rooster Walk Music and Arts Festival – Blue Mountain Festival Grounds hosts this annual May event. Multiple music genres are represented through live performances. Food, children’s activities and arts and crafts are available throughout the day.

Virginia Cantaloupe Festival – An evening of magnificent entertainment, a tantalizing menu featuring cantaloupes, and time to relax fill the lawn of Berry Hill Resort and Conference Center on a Friday in June. Advanced tickets are required.

Martinsville Culture Crawl – This celebration of arts and culture involves plenty of participation throughout uptown Martinsville. Live music, community theatrical performances and cocktail parties bring the town to life. Visit participating museums, shops, art studios and restaurants to add to the festivities.

Bassett Heritage Festival – This September event features food, crafters, vendors and more. Downtown Bassett comes to life with a classic car show, music and children’s activities. The old Train Depot features a historic exhibit.

Belle Grove Wine Festival – Belle Grove Plantation hosts the event that offers a fine variety of Shenandoah Valley wines. Tours of the home, food, music and crafts add to this Saturday in September.

Rock the Grapes Festival at Veramar – On a Saturday in October, crowds gather at Veramar Vineyard for fun with all-day wine tasting, live music, foods, activities and more. There is no admission fee for the day of fun.
