Choosing the 10 best Virginia events in October is no easy task because it’s festival season. So many possibilities.

The following list offers a variety of locations around the state as well as some variety for the type of event.

1 - Virginia State Fair
The Virginia State Fair, one of the largest statewide events of the year, begins in September and ends in October. The annual attendance at The Meadow Event Park in Doswell is about 250,000 people. General admission tickets are $15 for teens and adults with a variety of discounts.

2 - Richmond Folk Festival
It’s hard to beat three days of free entertainment at the Richmond Folk Festival, which draws more than 200,000 people every year when the weather is good. The festival at the Richmond riverfront between 2nd and 7th streets has multiple stages with groups performing all day long.

3 - Yorktown Victory Festival
The annual Yorktown Victory Festival takes place at the American Revolution Museum in Yorktown to celebrate America’s momentous victory in 1781. Activities include a Continental Army encampment, artillery firings, hands-on military experiences, Revolution-era farm and educational programs.

4 - Richmond Oktoberfest
Virginia’s first Oktoberfest dates back to 1969. The celebration takes place Friday and Saturday in the Old Dominion Building at Richmond Raceway, 600 E. Laburnum Ave. A full schedule of entertainers perform throughout Friday night, Saturday afternoon and Saturday night. General admission tickets are $12 in advance and $15 at the door.

5 - Dinwiddie, Halifax and Craig County Fairs
OK, so listing the Dinwiddie, Halifax and Craig county fairs as one event is a cheat, but who can choose? Either way, they represent three different Virginia regions -- central, south and southwest -- so county fair lovers may only want to choose one. They are the last chance for anyone to visit a county fair during the year.

6 - Winchester Oktoberfest
If Richmond is too far to drive from the Richmond Oktoberfest, Virginians and Virginia visitors have another option at the Winchester Oktoberfest in the northwest corner of the state. Even better, it takes place in the pretty Old Town district. Advance tickets are $20.

7 - Appomattox Historic Railroad Festival
The Appomattox Historic Railroad Festival may not claim attendance as large as the state fair, but the state fair has nothing about railroads. This classic, two-day community festival has dancers, musicians, fireworks, small gauge steam engine rides and other activities from 9 a.m. Saturday through 5 p.m. Sunday.

8 - Virginia Wine Festival
Wine and beer festivals are all the rage anymore, and one of the biggest is the Virginia Wine Festival in the northern Virginia town of Ashburn. The festival features 20 wineries during the two-day event. General admission tickets are $39.

9 - Blue Ridge Folklife Festival
The Blue Ridge Folklife Festival at the Blue Ridge Institute & Museum offers “musicians, moonshiners, craftspeople, cooks, motorheads, mule jumpers, horse pullers, coon dog racers, antique tractor buffs, and old-time gamers”. This southwest Virginia event in Ferrum, a small town in Franklin County, always takes place on the fourth Saturday of October. General admission tickets are $10.

10 - Newport News Fall Festival
The two-day Newport News Fall Festival has been in existence for nearly 50 years. With more than 150 vendors and live entertainment, the event attracts 35,000 people annually.
