Natural Tunnel State Park
If you want all the outdoor fun of a state park along, with some wonderful modern amenities, then Natural Tunnel State Park is a perfect choice. Natural Tunnel State Park, located in Scott County about 13 miles from Gate City, boasts nearly 1,000 acres of trails, camping sites and beautiful cabins.
Of course, another reason to visit this southwest Virginia park is to see the feature that gave Natural Tunnel State Park its name: the Natural Tunnel. The picturesque geological formation has been taking shape for more than 1 million years. Today, the tunnel is 850 feet long and 100 feet high, and it is a truly breathtaking sight.
Park Activities
The large park offers a variety of outdoor activities, including fishing, swimming, camping, hiking and cycling. It is also equipped with a few extra attractions that other parks do not have, such as train rides, chair lifts, a pool with a tube slide and an amphitheater. The chair lift gives visitors to the park a chance to enjoy a birds-eye-view of the gorgeous scenery.
Should you visit during the winter months, sledding and snowshoe hikes are some of the activities that you can enjoy. Just seeing the park covered in a blanket of snow is reason enough to visit.
Visitors who want to stay overnight will find an array of accommodations. RV parking is available, as are tent sites and a variety of cabins. Whether you want a rustic camping experience or a cabin with all of the comforts of home you will find it at Natural Tunnel State Park.
Spend one day hiking on the miles of trails and the next lounging by the pool or shopping in the well-equipped camp store. If you have some reluctant campers in your family, this park with its many amenities is a good compromise.
Camping here is certainly not “roughing it” and even those who typically enjoy a resort vacation will be impressed with the offerings.
Guided cave tours, educational programs and train rides through the Natural Tunnel are a few of the other activities you’ll find at this Virginia State Park.
