Poquoson Seafood Festival

Sample some of the region’s best seafood at the Poquoson Seafood Festival, which honors the watermen and fishing communities around the Chesapeake Bay.

A crowd of about 50,000 gathers every year to enjoy seafood, fishing contests, entertainment, and local arts and crafts. This year’s festival is October 17th-19th.

Directions to General Parking Areas: From I-64 take the Poquoson exit (256B) to Victory Blvd./Rt. 171. Remain on Rt. 171 for approximately 5-6 miles. Follow signs leading into the festival parking area.

Friday: 5 p.m.-10 p.m.
Saturday: 10 a.m.-10 p.m.
Sunday: 12:30 p.m.-6:30 p.m.

Events and Exhibits
Regional and local folk, jazz, and big band musicians and local dance groups will perform all three days. Bring a beach chair or blanket to enjoy the concerts.

Dozens of food vendors will offer crab cakes, shrimp, oysters, clams, clam chowder, soft shell crabs, catfish, and she crab soup – all featuring locally caught seafood.

The Poquoson Art League Juried Arts and Crafts Show is one of the largest shows in Virginia with more than 160 artists and artisans.

The Kid’s Corner Children’s Area will feature magicians, rides, and a puppet show.

The “Catch of the Day” baby contest will be on Saturday at 10 a.m.

Kick-Off Events
Visit Poquoson on the weekends leading up to the festival for sporting events that highlight local fishing and boating skills.

On Saturday, Sept.27, the Bull Island Anglers will host the Fishing Tournament. Visitors may sign up for the Speckled Trout Shootout or the Red Drum Roundup. For more information call 757-871-9246 or visit

The Weigh-in Party after the tournament features barbeque, beer, music, line-dancing, and face-painting. Local vendors and a silent auction will provide opportunities to purchase locally produced arts and crafts.

There will also be heart-healthy cooking and CPR demonstrations. Everything benefits the American Heart Association.
4-9 p.m., $25 per person

Local watermen still use traditional “Chesapeake Bay deadrise” wood-hulled workboats. On Sunday, Sept. 28, they will demonstrate their boating skills at the Workboat Races. The winner will be this year’s “King of the Bay.”

On Saturday, Oct.4, the Poquoson Education Foundation and the Kiwanis Club of Poquoson will sponsor the Seafood Festival 5K Fun Run and 2-Mile Walk. The 5K loop is on fast asphalt surfaces and runs through beautiful Poquoson.

8:30 a.m.: registration starts at 7:15 a.m. at Poquoson High School
