Henrico County in Central Virginia has a population of more than 300,000 people. The city of Richmond, which is the state capitol, lies within the county.
The county has three popular attractions in particular. They are the Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden, Capitol Trail, Glen Allen Cultural Arts Center. Henrico also has made a major commitment to county parks.
Demographics
Henrico is 57 percent white, 31 percent black and 12 percent other, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. The average household has 2.5 residents. More than 91 percent of the residents are high school graduates and more than 43 percent have a college bachelor’s degree or higher.

It has 139,000 housing units of which nearly 63 percent are owner-occupied. The median gross rent is $1,170.
Schools
Henrico County is the sixth largest school system in Virginia, the Henrico County Board of Education says. The board has five members representing each of the five magisterial districts in the county.
The system has 46 elementary schools, 12 middle schools, nine high schools, two Advanced Career Education Centers and three Alternative Program Centers. The total student population is about 49,000.

Government
Henrico County has a county manager form of government with a board of five supervisors representing the five magisterial districts, according to the Henrico County government. County services include 11 libraries.

Safety
In 2020, Henrico had a 12 percent decrease in the total number of Part I offenses compared to 2019, the county sheriff’s office reported. The county also had a 12% decrease from the county’s five-year average.
The total decrease included a decrease in burglaries (33 percent), rapes (31 percent), and larcenies (12 percent) when compared to 2019. There was an increase in aggravated assaults (16 percent) and homicides (114 percent).
Economy
The median household income is more than $70,000 and the median per capita income is nearly $40,000. About 9 percent of the population lives in poverty.
History
Sir Thomas Dale left Jamestown in 1611 to establish a settlement on a peninsula on the north side of the James River. That peninsula is now known as Farrar’s Island. Dale established “Henricus,” also known as the city or town of “Henrico.” The name was in honor of Prince Henry of Wales, son of English King James I.
