Fauquier County is a county in the northern part of the Commonwealth of Virginia.
The county seat is Warrenton. Fauquier County is part of the Washington Metropolitan Area.
In 2010, the population of Fauquier County’s population was 65,203.
Fauquier County covers 651 square miles. It is an area known for its dedication to agriculture. Fauquier County is considered to be the heart of wine and horse country.
Fauquier County is a financially well off area. In the most recent U.S. Census Bureau, the county came in eighth on the list of highest incomes.
History
Fauquier County was established in 1759. It was originally part of Prince William County. The county was named after Francis Fauquier, Lieutenant Governor of Virginia, who allegedly won the land in a game of poker.
The first recordings of the land took place in 1608, when the area known today as Fauquier County was listed by John Smith as part of the northern neck of the colony of Virgiia.
Much of the civil war was fought in the area surrounding Fauquier County. The infamous Battle of Manassas took place just outside Fauquier County, and an estimated 1,800 wounded soldiers were brought to Warrenton’s makeshift hospitals.
Notable residences of Fauquier County include John Marshall, the fourth Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Turner Ashby, “Stonewall” Jackson’s Confederate cavalry commander in the Civil War, and Colonel John Singleton Mosby, a Confederate Colonel during the Civil War.

Fauquier County provides plenty of opportunity to get outside. The county has over 21 parks, offering fishing, boating, hiking, camping, bicycling, picnic facilities, and bridle trails.
Fauquier County has several equestrian events, including the Gold Cup, Twilight Polo, The Warrenton Horse Show, and The Hunt Country Stable Tour.
