Amazement Square Children’s Museum

Amazement Square in downtown Lynchburg is home to one of the best children’s museums in Virginia.

In fact, this one has so much to see and do that visitors might even be tempted to visit when their kids are in school. Driving up to the brick building plastered in a few Spielberg-like insects, aka the “Lynchbugs,” and visitors realize they are not just at any children’s museum.

The Amazement Tower is the tallest indoor climbing tower in the United States, reaching through all four floors of Amazement Square and leading into a rooftop observation deck. Kids (or moms and dads) that aren’t quite up to bounding through the tunnels, ladders, and slides can take a cool light-up staircase or a glass elevator all the way up the tower.

Permanent exhibits include the “On The James” exhibit, which focuses on the history of bateau travel on the James in the 19th century and the “Indian Island” exhibit, which explores the life of the native Monacans of Virginia.

Centra Health sponsors the “Your Amazing Body” gallery where kids get to delve into the different aspects and functions of various organs and systems.

Toddlers can learn to milk a cow along with other aspects of farm life in hands-on, imaginative activities in the “Big Red Barn.” The Kaleidoscope gallery offers children a space to play Picasso as well as play rock musician.

Exhibits and Galleries

Each exhibit and gallery features a plethora of hands-on, interactive, creative activities that parents and grandparents can participate in alongside the children. After burning up so many calories, families can grab a bite at the N&W Snack Station or shop around for unique or educational items in the Kidz Warehouse, where all merchandise includes the tax on the price tag.

Considering the galleries that are always on display, the Imagination Studio that teaches a variety of skills and crafts in a way that doesn’t even feel like learning, and the new exhibits that crop up onto the calendar every few months, Amazement Square is an amazing experience that kids can delight in again and again.
