Theodore Roosevelt Island

Theodore Roosevelt Island

Theodore Roosevelt Island is designed to pay tribute to the former president’s love of nature and the outdoors.

In the 1930s, Theodore Roosevelt Island, formerly known as Mason’s Island, was neglected and overgrown. The Olmstead Brothers Firm transformed the land into a memorial to President Theodore Roosevelt.

The firm designed a forest to resemble one previously there and developed several walking trails.

A memorial plaza dedicated to the president highlights his character, ideals, and some of his more famous quotes.

The island is protected today by the National Park Service. Visitors come to enjoy nature and indulge in a hobby so important to the nation’s 26th president.

Location

Theodore Roosevelt Island is located near Rosslyn, Virginia. It is on the George Washington Memorial Parkway.

The island is a 15 minute walk away from the Rosslyn Metro Station. Those who travel to the island this way should head for Key Bridge upon leaving the station and follow the trial to Theodore Roosevelt Island.

Mount Vernon Trail and the Potomac National Heritage Scenic Trail both pass by Theodore Roosevelt Island.

Rosslyn, Virginia, is in the Washington D.C. Metro Area. It is an hour and 40 minute drive from Richmond and just over three hours from Virginia Beach.

Hours and Admission

The park is open daily from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. and is open year round. Admission is free.

For certain activities in the park, such as weddings, commercial use, filming, and religious ceremonies, permits are required. Permits are $50.

Things to Do

Theodore Roosevelt Island has three main walking paths: the Swamp Trail, the Woods Trail, and the Upland Trail. These trails are all relatively short but provide plenty of opportunity to see nature up close.

The Swamp Trail is flattest, with a boardwalk. The Woods Trail and the Upland Trail are covered in gravel.

Biking is not permitted on the island. Bike racks are located at the entrance of the island for storage.

Kayaking and canoeing around the island are both ways to see nature up close, as well as the Potomac River’s influence on the island.

Wading birds, raptors, and warblers all live on the island. Bird watchers can see these birds in their natural habitat.

Nearly 200 species of birds can be found throughout the year at Theodore Roosevelt Island.

Teachers can take school groups to the park to visit Theodore Roosevelt’s memorial, explore nature, and walk the trails.

Ranger Programs are also in place for children.
